Annual General Meeting Issue!

The river level peaked at 1.3 metres on December 8th, subsiding later in the month to the current 0.4 metres. Certainly the river was running very fast on the 5th when we held a working party.  I wouldn’t like to have fallen in the river, and I managed not to do so!

It’s the end of the Calendar Year, and the Winter Solstice is now behind us. Here’s looking forward to Spring. This was Sanctuary last March!

2020 Subscriptions.

At the Club’s October committee meeting, the annual subscription for 2020 was agreed, and we are pleased to confirm that - for the ninth year in succession - there will be no increase. The subscription remains at £240 for ordinary members, and is due by 31 January 2020 at the very latest.

Please note that cheques remain the preferred method of payment. They must however be made payable to: Harrogate Fly Fishers Club. This is important as Barclays Bank will no longer accept any variation of the payee’s name

(e.g. Harrogate Fly Fishers,  HFFC,  or Harrogate Anglers Club).

It’s recognised that some members may no longer have the use of a cheque book, and in this case they should remit an on-line transfer of the sum due to:

Harrogate Fly Fishers Club; account at Barclays, Harrogate Branch.

Sort Code 20-37-13, Account No. 60471453. It is essential that the member’s initial and surname is stated in the reference box, otherwise the Treasurer will be unable to verify from whom it has been sent.

Members often pay their subscriptions by cheque when attending the AGM in January (details of the meeting will be advised in due course), and they will receive their ticket, guest tickets and catch return form that evening. Otherwise, the tickets etc. for fully paid-up members are posted shortly thereafter.

Nick Brigham, Hon. Treasurer

Display and sale of items of fishing tackle from Norman Hitchen of Ripon, formerly a Committee member of the Salmon and Trout Association

PIE AND PEA SUPPER.

Norman Hitchen

Members will notice that after the close of the AGM, before the Pie and Peas arrive, there will be an opportunity to view and purchase some items of fishing tackle owned by Norman Hitchen, a well-known Ripon trout and salmon fisher.

Norman had nothing to do with our club, but he was a long term committee member for The Salmon and Trout Association. He is now entering full time care, and would like to find good homes for his fishing gear, which he is no longer able to use. Any monies received would go to his daughter, who has provided us with the equipment, and help Norman in his new surroundings.

Club Website – For Sale!

Our club website https://harrogateflyfishers.com/ has a new feature under our Members Area heading.

’For Sale’ displays a number of fishing items. A couple of members have already put stuff up there – maybe you’d like to buy something, or to add your own items to our website? Get shopping- it’s still Christmassy!

There are very clear instructions to show members how to buy items displayed, or how to put their own items up for sale. You’ll need the password – which has been publicised (an email from me in mid November), but is available from the Hon. Sec. Better still, come to the AGM on January 21st, meet some fellow members and find all sorts of stuff out about the club! There’s Pie and Peas too (highly recommended)

Working Party

The second Working Party of the season took place on Thursday December 5th. Five of us parked at the end of the old railway track near Low Hall, and walked across the fields to the river. We got stuck into yet more brambles in the stretch above the stepping stones. The weather held fine, for a change, and I think we made a difference (though I’m concerned that maybe brambles grow faster than we can cover the length of the riverbank!) there’s now a much improved access to the river, and even a spot for sunbathing/picnicking if the mood takes us (maybe when the weather gets warmer!)

It was generally agreed that we might need to come back for some more work as the brambles try to re-assert themselves in Spring!

An excellent and productive New Year to all HFFC members – whether it’s with fishing or with family and friends!

David Clayden

HFFC Hon. Sec.
